At OppJar we believe that every dream matters but sometimes achieving it not only takes a little help but encouragement to ask for help! This is why we created the first-ever OppJar Scholars Program for the Salinas Valley Dream Academy, a non-profit serving low-income students. The leadership development work they do lifts up entire communities as they strive to fill the gaps that exist in the educational system and to shine a light on an empowering path for our teens. Every Dream Academy story of triumph motivates the next generation of youth to imagine new possibilities.
Central to the OppJar Scholars Program is, of course, stories! As experts in storing memories on our App, we know the value of storytelling. Scholar participants were asked to record their original narratives for the world to see! We are proud to share their stories with you and to award each of these deserving students a scholarship. You can watch their videos, read their essays, or contribute to their scholarship fund by using the links unique to each student.
What is OppJar?
OppJar is an app that allows parents the opportunity to safely archive memories from friends and family in a virtual jar--photos, recordings, and written messages--and to crowdfund cash gifts into a UGMA/UTMA custodial account for their children.
OppJar funds can be used for anything that benefits the child upon turning 18. College? Start-up? Olympic world record? First home purchase? The sky's the limit.
Here's how it works. We'd love to have you join us!
It Takes A Village
All participants received an OppJar account making it easy for them to also use OppJar to raise funds through family and friends. Scholarship recipients will have the award money deposited into their OppJar account and can access it when they turn 18. The money can be used for college or for any other purpose.
The ‘Class of 2021’ OppJar Scholars
Meet our first class of participating scholars. Every story is compelling. And each is sure to inspire. You can also contribute funds or memories to their OppJar accounts using the links below their photo.
In 2014, Forbes Magazine ranked Salinas as the second least educated city in the United States. The average weighted GPA of our students is 3.85. As part of the Academy, students participate in Saturday meetings where they participate in team-building and leadership activities, engage community leaders as part of a dynamic speakers’ series, participate in numerous community service activities, visit colleges, and fundraise to take a year-end educational trip to the East Coast.
Help Fund OppJar Scholars
In addition to contributing to the students' OppJar account directly, there is an opportunity for businesses and individuals to join this project with matching funds. As well as making a difference in students' lives, matching partners will be recognized on scholarship materials and through social media. Learn about becoming a matching sponsor or how you can make a deposit in the name of one of the participating scholars by contacting Dan Castro. Thank you for your support!
